The Gospel of John 10:7-13 (Jesus explains his Shepherd role)

Jesus explains his role as a shepherd in John 10:7-13.

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

Questions for discussion:

  1. Can you name a parable in Luke where Jesus demonstrates his love as a shepherd to each one of us? What is its biblical citation?
  2. Does Jesus condemn all who are thieves and the dishonest?
  3. Do you feel that Jesus is shepherding you in your life, or is he silent at times?

1. Can you name a parable in Luke where Jesus demonstrates his love as a shepherd to each one of us? What is its biblical citation?
The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:1-7). The Good Shepherd leaves the 99 to find the 1 lost sheep.

2. Does Jesus condemn all who are thieves and the dishonest?
No. He continually offers grace and mercy to all who are sinners. “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32)

3. Do you feel that Jesus is shepherding you in your life, or is he silent at times?
I know Jesus is shepherding my life, but I can lose the ability to hear the Holy Spirit when my walk with Jesus is not right. When I fight temptations and walk the talk, I see amazing things happen.

1. Aside from Luke 15:1-7, I also like the bible verse John 10: 11 I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

2. Does Jesus condemn all who are thieves and the dishonest?
Jesus does not condemn the thieves or the dishonest (he shares meals with the tax collectors). He wants to get close to them and change their ways. He wants us to sin no more. He always preach about forgiveness, he who has never sinned cast the first stone. He only has unconditional love for everyone.

3. Do you feel that Jesus is shepherding you in your life or is he silent at times?
For the longest time I never felt his presence but once I did, I knew he never left my side. He was never silent again, he was always beside me. He’s always holding your hand, he’s always walking by your side and in your most difficult moments he is carrying you. Sometimes you don’t feel him but he is always there. Open your heart to him so you can feel his presence. Look at your blessings everyday, he is in each one of them. Look at every kindness, every smile shown your way, he is in each one of them.
