The Gospel of John 8:12-20 (Jesus is the Light of the World )

Here is the section where Jesus tells us that he is the Light of the World John 8:12-20.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”

14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”

19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”

“You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.

Questions for discussion:

  1. Jesus said he is “the light of the world.”  What does that mean to each individual and can you think of any Scripture that supports it?
  2. Jesus states, “I stand with the Father who sent me.”  This acknowledges that there is more than one person in God, the Trinity.  Can you name another interaction like this for the existence of the Trinity when Jesus was suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane?
  3. Has Jesus lit up your life? Name one way.
  4. Can you name a scene in Angelic Wars, End of the Beginning where the angels find the clue of “thy word is a lamp unto my feet, which relates to Jesus as the Word?”

1. Jesus said he is “the light of the world.” What does that mean to each individual and can you think of any Scripture that supports it?

John 8:12 is the second of seven “I AM” declarations of Jesus, recorded only in John’s Gospel, that point to his unique divine identity and purpose. John 3:19-21 explains the application of Jesus as the light. “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” Jesus is the light and sin is darkness. When we expose sin (our evil deeds) to the light (confession), Jesus conquers them.

2. Jesus states, “I stand with the Father who sent me.” This acknowledges that there is more than one person in God, the Trinity. Can you name another interaction like this for the existence of the Trinity when Jesus was suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane?

Jesus prayed to another person, the Father. The fact that the Father has another will makes him another person. “He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:41-42).

3. Has Jesus lit up your life? Name one way.

Jesus keeps opening doors for me to help build the Kingdom of Heaven in different ways. If it isn’t writing novels, it is leading bible studies with people around the world.

4. Can you name a scene in Angelic Wars, End of the Beginning where the angels find the clue of “thy word is a lamp unto my feet, which relates to Jesus as the Word?”

In the district of Sardis, Michael and Malachy reacted to this clue by slipping the Word sword blade into a slit that opened a gigantic cavern.
