Question no 1,
The desciples were frightened , they thought they were seeing aspirit and when Jesus
I agree, Ashaba. The interesting thing about this scene is that it shows that people of that time believed in ghosts.
ReplyQuestion no 1 ,
The disciples were frightened thinking that they were seeing aspirit, then jesus told them not to be afraid they were all reassured and therefore jesus entered the ship ,the wind ceased and found themselves on land.
Question no 2
However the people of Nazareth rejected , Jesus moved to Capernaum were people were amazed at his teaching and he taught them as one who has authority not like teachers of law. For atime jesus was popular with crowds , others came to him to cure them.
I don’t recall the Bible stating why Jesus moved his operation center to Capernaum. I don’t know if it was because Nazareth didn’t have faith. On the other hand. Nazareth wasn’t a big town. I have been there(and am going back this year). It is located on the side of a mountain west of the Sea of Galilee. It was not (and is not) on a major trade route. Capernaum, on the other hand is located on a major trade route–the Via Maris ( aka Imperial Road). This road connects Damascus through Israel to Egypt. Jesus would meet international travelers passing through here. Paul would later use this tactic in other trade routes like Ephesus, Thyatira, etc. The other reason why Jesus would make this his hub is because it was where Peter and Andrew lived. Others lived in Bethesda which was just a short distance away. So, Jesus had lodging and many people would travel there to see him.
ReplyRick’s thoughts:
1. After all that Jesus had done, why did the Disciples get frightened after seeing him walk across the water?
Matthew 22-36 tells more of the story about the scene where Jesus walked on water. It explains that the Apostles thought Jesus was a ghost. When they were convinced it was Jesus, Peter then tried to walk on water from the boat. He was successful but lost faith. He started to sink. Jesus admonished him of having little faith. One important point is when Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he did not sink. Once he lost that, he started to sink. This story is a good example of how we are to live our lives. We need to have faith in Jesus and keep our eyes on him.
2. Why do you think people went to Capernaum to search for Jesus?
John 6:26 will read that the crowd only wanted food. “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.” This seems to be a recurring theme to many of us who call on Jesus. We call upon him for our temporary needs and crises and miss the whole reason why he sacrificed himself for us. It is like Jesus is an ATM machine for our emergencies. We only talk to him when we need something from him.
3. Does it frighten you, (like Peter) to put all of your trust in Jesus?
In my life, I am not frightened to put my trust in Jesus, but to be honest, not ALL of my trust. I think if we are honest, we feel secure because we have money in the bank, food in the cupboard, a job, etc. All of those can go away.
4. Can you name a scene in any of my books or short stories that has a body of water in the presence of God?
At the end of Angelic Wars, First Rebellion, its Prequel and the short story–The Call of Azarias, I describe God’s Throne from Revelation 4. Verse 6 of that chapter reads ” In front of the throne, there was something like a sea of glass as clear as crystal.” Also, in the Angelic Wars, End of the Beginning, I have a battle in the lake created by the flooded Philadelphia. Other water scenes are coming in future novels.
