The Gospel of John 6:1-15 (The Feeding of the 5,000.)

We change gears into Chapter 6:1-15 where Jesus performs one of his most popular miracles.

Sometime after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival was near.

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Questions for discussion:

  1. Do you think the only purpose of this miracle was to feed 5,000 men (plus women and children), who would go hungry the next day?
  2. Why did the people call Jesus a prophet?
  3. Why did Jesus withdraw when they wanted to make him king?
  4. Have you experienced a miracle that yielded more than you asked for?

Question no: 1;
None who would go hungry because everyone believed the miraculous sign of feeding the 5000people and believed the healing of the sick and proclaiming the kingdom of God to the maximum. And this the the gentle reminder to our daily Christian lives that nothing we face here on earth is too big for God.

    Thank you for your comment, Ashaba. I will respond more thoroughly in my comments. However, I wanted to say that you may have a better view point of God’s miracles than most here because you see the need in your home country of Uganda. It would seem that when food in that country is provided during difficult circumstances, it is easy to see God’s hand in it.

    Yes, I see your point in that you are stepping into their shoes to identify Jesus as a Prophet. However, I will comment on this further later and why it is not correct for us to agree with this assessment, especially after the Resurrection.

Question no 3;
Jesus withdraw because his work was to pave away for people from sins, he knew this was not God’s plan for him , if he became an earth king ,he knew,his power would be limited and he would never touch the whole world.

Question no 4;
Yep, as daily Christians, we pray to God always and everyone experiences dreams of his/her kind which show that God is overkill of every thing and nothing we face here on earth is too big for him.

Great comments in this section!

1. Do you think the only purpose of this miracle was to feed 5,000 men (plus women and children), who would go hungry the next day?

God will provide for us, but how this will happen has significance. Notice that in giving the five loaves and two fish, the boy and the apostles gave Jesus what little they had to offer. Jesus blessed it and gave back a blessing that was far greater than anyone could imagine. The significance is that he blesses us the same way. We give what little we have to offer and he blesses it and gives it back to us in a way we couldn’t have imagined.

2. Why did the people call Jesus a prophet?

The people have only been experienced with prophets way back into the Old Testament. A prophet is a person who speaks for God to the people. A priest is one who speaks for the people to God. Jesus obviously spoke for God. John the Baptist was also a prophet speaking for God.

3. Why did Jesus withdraw when they wanted to make him king?

The people thought the Messiah was going to save them from the Romans. Jesus was greater than that kind of leader. Jesus claimed to be a king because he said, “”My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

4. Have you experienced a miracle that yielded more than you asked for?

I have been blessed far more than I deserve. It is easier to see with 20/20 hindsight. When writing my novels, I try to show that in the lives of the angels.
