The Gospel of John 2:1-12 (Jesus performs his first miracle) – Angelic Wars

The Gospel of John 2:1-12 (Jesus performs his first miracle)

Here is the next section (John 2:1-12) about the water changed into wine, with questions below.

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom asideand said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Questions and discussion:

  1. What did Jesus mean by “My hour has not come?”
  2. Was he being disrespectful to his mother?
  3. Jesus’s mother understood as his ministry developed. Turning the tables, do you remember a time when you disrespected a parent?  Did you understand better as you got older?

What did Jesus mean by “My hour has not come?” It was not time for him to perform miracles, he was gently reminding his mother that it wasn’t her place to direct his ministry.
Was he being disrespectful to his mother? No, he wasn’t being disrespectful. In fact, he was being a dutiful son because even though he knew it wasn’t time yet, he did perform the miracle.
Jesus’s mother understood as his ministry developed. Turning the tables, do you remember a time when you disrespected a parent? Did you understand better as you got older? Yes, i remember a time or two. I definitely understood as I got older. We think we know it all when we are young when in fact, we know nothing. It is always nice to have the guidance of our parents, I know they only want the best for us.

Rick’s take on this section:

What did Jesus mean by “My hour has not come?”

1. Jesus’s hour came when he was to prove he was the Messiah and the Savior of our sins. That came at his crucifixion and resurrection where the Gospel reads the following: “After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: Father, the hour has come.” (John 17:1)

Was he being disrespectful to his mother?

2. Jesus was not disrespectful but understood the big picture of his ministry. He tried to inform (or remind) his mother that he did not come to save the wedding party but save us from ourselves.

3. Jesus’s mother understood as his ministry developed. Turning the tables, do you remember a time when you disrespected a parent? Did you understand better as you got older?

I guess there were more times than I could remember, but the one time that was funny got me in trouble. My mother was mad at me and asked for my car keys, saying I couldn’t see my girlfriend. I gave her my keys but kept the car key and left. There was a phone call waiting at my girlfriend’s house for me to come back from my stepfather. I ended up marrying the girl seven years later after we graduated from college. Of course I learned a lesson and demanded more from our kids. (It was worth getting in trouble for the kiss!)
